How I Scored 460 Marks in OET Listening Part A (2025)

OET Listening Part A is one of the most challenging subtests for candidates. With its fast-paced consultations and tricky paraphrasing, it often feels overwhelming. But here’s the good news: once you understand the hidden patterns, it becomes your easiest scoring opportunity.

When I first sat the OET, I struggled to break past 400 marks. But in 2025, I achieved a perfect 42/42 in Listening Part A, and here’s how you can do it too.

✅ Why Part A is Difficult

  • You only get one chance to hear the audio.
  • Distractors sound very convincing.
  • Medical synonyms confuse many test-takers.
  • Time is extremely limited.

✅ My Exact Strategy for 460 Marks

1. Pre-Listening Prediction

Before the audio starts, scan the notes/questions. Predict what type of word will fill the gap (date, name, test, diagnosis).

2. Focus on Paraphrasing

Examiners rarely repeat the same word. If the notes say “diagnosis”, the speaker may say “was identified as”.

3. Abbreviate for Speed

Write short forms like HTN (Hypertension), DM (Diabetes Mellitus) to save time.

4. Stay Calm if You Miss One

Never freeze. If you lose one answer, move on immediately — don’t risk missing 2–3 more.

5. Adopt the “Doctor’s Mindset”

Imagine you’re writing case notes in real life. This mindset makes the listening flow naturally.

✅ Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Writing full sentences instead of notes.
❌ Expecting exact words instead of synonyms.
❌ Spending too much time on one blank.
❌ Ignoring the consultation flow (symptoms → diagnosis → treatment).

✅ Hidden Hacks That Got Me 42/42

  • Most answers appear in order — don’t jump around.
  • Speakers often stress the correct answer with tone/pace.
  • If two answers look correct, the shorter and more precise one usually wins.
  • Practice only with authentic OET Listening audios, not random IELTS/TOEFL materials.

📌 Final Advice

The OET Listening Part A Tips 2025 I used aren’t complicated — they’re smart adjustments. Focus on paraphrasing, prediction, and note-taking speed, and you’ll see your score jump.

I went from struggling to a full 42/42 in Listening Part A — and you can too.
