Question 1 of 7
1. Question
Reading B: Text 1
Read the text and choose the answer (A, B, or C) which you think fits best according to the text.
C-reactive protein (CRP) test measures milligrams of CRP per litre of blood (mg/L). CRP is a protein made by the liver that is released into the blood within a few hours after tissue injury or the start of an infection. It is found in increased serum concentrations after a heart attack, in sepsis, and after surgical procedures, and may be one of the first signs of inflammation or infection in the body. Although the CRP blood test is not diagnostic, it frequently provides information about the presence of inflammation and can be used in conjunction with subjective and objective observations as well as physical examination to determine if a patient has an acute inflammatory condition or flare-up of a chronic inflammatory disease. A serum gel tube should be used to collect a sample of between 0.25 and 0.5ml of venous blood and should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection.

Rota Stand
Before using the rota stand, an appropriate risk assessment should be undertaken to ensure that the patient is able to bear weight independently.
The handlebar should be adjusted to a comfortable height for the patient. The shin pad can be moved up or down by 40mm.
Place the rota stand in front of the patient and help the patient sit at the front edge of the chair.
Place the patient’s feet on the non-slip foot plate and gently wheel the rota stand so it ends up with the patient’s shins firmly against the shin pad.
Put on the brake to stabilise the rota stand. Assist the patient to pull themselves into a standing position.
To assist the patient from a standing to sitting position, reverse the above procedure.

Inhalation Burn Management
Airway Burns
Airway burns may occur in isolation or in combination with smoke inhalation injury. It is rare for airway burns to occur without facial burns except in specific scenarios, e.g. after the inhalation of hot foods or after direct application of heat to the airways. The first symptoms of inhalation burns include voice changes and hoarseness which may progress to stridor and airway obstruction in severe cases.
Diagnosis
Airway burns should be suspected if a patient presents with facial, perioral, or nasal burns. Patients who present with voice changes, hoarseness, and stridor should always be assumed to have an upper airway burn and need further examination and urgent interventions. Because upper airway burns present significant management challenges, patients with suspected upper airway burns should be managed in intensive care with a complete anaesthetic review.

Memo: To all Nursing Staff
Pilot Study: Doppler and compression bandages
From July 2020, a trial will be set up between the Western Suburbs Hospital and the Western Community Team to evaluate the effectiveness of a six-monthly Doppler assessment and implementation of compulsory use of compression bandaging for all patients with a chronic venous ulcer. Patient information leaflets are available to use when educating patients about the benefits of compression bandaging (reduction in pain, shorter healing time, better feeling of support). Please ensure that all staff (hospital-based and community) use the Pilot Chronic Ulcer Management Care Pathway as this documentation will form an important part of the final evaluation of the trial next year.

Managing acute sinusitis: symptoms for 10 days or less
1.1 Do not offer an antibiotic prescription: advise that antibiotics are not needed for symptoms such as pain or fever which can be managed with self-care.
1.2 Give advice on self-care: paracetamol or ibuprofen usually give adequate relief. Explain that some people find nasal saline or nasal decongestants are helpful, although there is insufficient evidence to show that they relieve nasal congestion. There is also no evidence to support the use of oral decongestants, antihistamines, mucolytics, steam inhalation, or warm face packs.
1.3 Advise that the usual course of acute sinusitis is between 2 and 3 weeks. Ensure that patients understand the need to seek urgent medical help if symptoms worsen rapidly or if they become systemically very unwell.
1.4 Reassess patients if symptoms worsen: consider alternative diagnosis (e.g. dental infection or more serious infection).

Use of bed rails and bed rail covers
5.3 All Healthcare professionals, including students and temporary staff who use bed rails or bed rail covers are responsible for ensuring they have the appropriate knowledge to do so. Ward managers should ensure that all staff have completed the relevant training package and have been assessed as competent to ensure that bed rails and bed rail covers are used safely to avoid patient falls. The initial risk assessment must be reviewed if there are any changes in the patient’s condition or if the patient becomes distressed by the bed rails or bed rail covers. This is especially important as patients may otherwise attempt to climb over the bed rails. Bed rails should be lowered during the moving and handling of patients or when any personal care is undertaken, and then be returned to a fixed upright position when these procedures are completed.
6. The policy document establishes that bed rails and bed rail cover
